How can Jurnal Alzheimer utilize cultural symbols and storytelling to raise awareness and improve understanding of Alzheimer's disease in Yogyakarta, Indonesia?

01

Background
Alzheimer's disease, often misunderstood as a natural part of aging, is a progressive condition marked by memory issues and behavioral changes. In Yogyakarta, which has the highest prevalence of Alzheimer's in Indonesia, a lack of awareness and local beliefs hinder proper diagnosis and treatment. Stories have a proven ability to convey meaningful messages and help others understand the storyteller's experiences.

Jurnal Alzheimer is a platform dedicated to collecting narratives from families and caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer's. This initiative aims to raise awareness and foster understanding of the disease within the community.

Jurnal Alzheimer uses storytelling and cultural symbols to raise awareness about Alzheimer's, helping families and caregivers share their experiences and foster a supportive network.

Approach
Discover
Extensive research on Alzheimer's disease in Yogyakarta was conducted, including interviews with healthcare professionals, caregivers, and affected families. Cultural immersion activities were undertaken and an in-depth interview with local archaelogist was done to understand local beliefs and significant cultural symbols.

Define
The challenge of raising Alzheimer's awareness in a culturally relevant way was identified. The target audience, including families and caregivers, was defined. Jurnal Alzheimer was positioned as a platform using storytelling to foster understanding and support.

Develop
Design concepts were inspired by traditional Batik patterns and significant cultural symbols. The visual identity was refined through iterations to ensure community resonance. An online digital kit and a physical kit containing tools like progress journals and caregiver diaries were developed to help caregivers document and share their experiences.

Deliver
The visual identity was implemented across the online platform and physical kits. The packaging was designed to be simple yet meaningful. Guidelines were developed to ensure design consistency. Community outreach activities were executed to introduce the new identity and encourage participation in the storytelling initiative.
